Statewide News
Thursday Night SSTV Nets

Thursday night saw the following participants VK7s – EV, HXT, TW, ZAB, PD, ZBX, HHS, ZMS, ZIR and ZSB sharing many photos.

It was another great night, this time covering radio telescopes, travel, radio field day setups, a home computer drawn chicken image and references to the 1975 Monty Python’s Holy Grail movie. With a couple excellent recreations of the "Black Night" scene from this movie. There were also images from Hobart Hackerspace’s Thursday night workshop and a promo for the Tassie Ham Conference and Expo.

Plus we now know why dinosaurs actually did became extinct and a few strange animals thrown in for good measure.

A reminder in Southern Tasmania, VK7RAF (146.650 -600kHz) can be used both locally and linked to VK7RJG by using different CTCSS tones. 123Hz for local Southern operation and 141.3Hz for linking RAF to VK7RJG (438.55 -7MHz). No tone is required on VK7RJG to connect with VK7RAF from the North and North West.

We get underway from around 7:30pm.

Last Wednesday’s club Tech Night was very well attended with Peter, VK7KPC arriving early and setting up one of the club radios to monitor the TestNet frequency, in anticipation of Nic, VK7WW starting the night’s net proceedings. Once again from Ross, VK7ALH and his seemingly endless supply of radio equipment from under his bench, came a Wireless Set No.108 Mark II. This is of particular interest as it was designed and developed for the Australian Armed Services and was manufactured in 1941 by Radio Corporation Pty. Ltd. in Melbourne.

This is a self-contained unit with batteries, intended for field use. Frequency coverage of this half watt AM transceiver is from 6 to 9 MHz, with an IF frequency of 1600 KHZ, not the expected 455 KHZ. It comes standard with dual VFOs and not the traditional crystal locked bank of channels.

If the operator happens to be the person carrying the unit, luckily it also comes with two Boden Cables. These clip in either side of the unit and come forward to the person carrying allowing for remote control, one for the Send - Off – Receive switch and the other to tune the receiver. The transmitter being tuned before placing the set on your back. This one is definitely going to be a long work in progress, but worth the effort Ross. Pictures of this item are available on the NTARC website under “Blogsö.

Peter has started to organise the club rooms ready for Jota/Joti and has successfully set up Echo Link and a DMR HotSpot using Pi-Star Digital Voice Software on the MMDVM - HotSpot Radio Station, which in turn uses Wi-Fi to gain access to the internet. Peter also produced pictures of his recently constructed dipole antenna to capture NOAA weather satellite images, he has produced some excellent results and is planning to raise the height, from the test position on his QTH gutter, to one that commands a better field of view. Can’t wait for the latest results on Discord.

There was a secondary team who were working at clearing timber and re-arranging cupboards to improve the ease of access for the Scouts moving between the club rooms. Unfortunately they must have disturbed something that had been happily decomposing, it did cause a mass exodus from the garage area until the offending source of the smell was removed and work could continue.

Lewis, VK7IT had brought along a laptop to configure his new DMR radio, sounds simple enough, but the laptop may not have been turned on for quite a while and you guessed it... three quarters of an hour later Windows had finally finished all its updates and Lewis was able to successfully complete what he started, aptly assisted by Colin, VK7ZCF.

Bernie VK7BR, brought along his new compact, Lithium battery powered cordless Soldering Iron that was "Designed and Developed in the Netherlands" by FERM, and yes, it's made in China. This little unit, model SGM1023, is about 150mm long has an inbuilt work light that is facing the tip and is charged from a USB port. A very tidy little unit Bernie.

The Club’s newest antenna is still being tested via WSPR. Some propagation maps are available at the end of the NTARC extract from these VK7 broadcasts, under “Blogsö on the club web site. Current data is available on the wsprnet.org website under call-sign VK7TAZ.

Altogether a very busy evening with some eventful happenings.

NTARC’s shipment of the just released, “Your Entry into Amateur Radioö manuals are available for collection from the club rooms on Wednesday Technical Nights or any Friday coffee mornings. The cost is $35. For any information or enquiries please use the “Contact Usö option on the NTARC web site.

JOTA/JOTI for 2022 volunteers to assistance are needed!

The Venue is the NTARC Club rooms, which is the Rocherlea Scout Hall, Archer St, Rocherlea.

The sessions will be on Saturday the 15th of October from noon to 6pm and Sunday the 16th October from 10am till 3pm. Groups are planned to arrive in two hour blocks, split up and rotate through four activities.

At the Club Rooms we will need volunteers to assistance with:

The operation of each of the transceivers set up for voice chat by the participants.

Assembly of Morse code trainer kits, (no soldering required only a screw driver).

Sending and receiving each other’s names by Morse code on the practice keys. (No, not live to air)

Plus external to the Club Rooms:

We need local contacts to chat with the kids in case we can’t link up to other Scout venues. If you are able to assist for any length of time over the two days please let Peter, VK7KPC or the club Secretary know of your availability by e-mailing secretary@ntarc.net

Tassie Ham Expo in November.

NTARC has booked a display table for the day of the Expo. A pre-loved equipment table will also be booked by the club, if there are any people interested in helping to stock it. Take this as an opportunity to seriously look at your shack equipment. If there is anything that is now superfluous to requirements why not turn it into money. Then spend the money at the Expo and help support the vendors that have ventured down to this end of the country by buying more equipment for your shack.

NEWS FROM THE SOUTH
WICEN Tasmania (South)

WICEN South are in need of some help.

We are tasked with providing safety comms and rider progress reports for the Portland Equine Endurance Ride at Pyengana on Saturday 15 October.

You may have realised that this date is also the JOTA/JOTI event.

A lot of our regular helpers are down to assist with JOTA and therefore we are really in need of help to man the Checkpoints for the Ride..

If any amateur or listener can see themselves as being able to assist by calling the rider numbers as they pass, then we would welcome your assistance. A pat of a horse and a pass of a sweet to a rider or two, are also on the cards.

We can offer an active couple of days, some great scenery and a chance to have a meal at The Pub In The Paddock. Your reward is knowing that you are helping the riders to test themselves while caring for their mounts at the same time.

Please contact Rod Finlayson, VK7TRF on 0417314425, or email roja3kel(at)yahoo.com.au for further details.

September Presentation Night
Casey Station Calling

Firstly we thank Warren VK0WN who gave us a huge tour of Casey Station from one end to the other and we even went outside!

We apologise firstly for there being no stream - some gremlins got into that system and the stream did not go out and unfortunately we are missing audio for the first 7m however we have put a lot of detail into the video description to cover the missing audio.

https://youtu.be/KpoWqHGWVpY

Warren started with a description of the WIFFA or the Winter International Film Festival of Antarctica which has just gone live. This festival sees many Antarctic bases taking on the challenge of producing a film in 48 hours with five chosen elements that are only released to everyone 48hours before the film is due.

https://www.wiffa.aq/en

The WIFFA element this year were:

Sound: The sound of Milk Frothing (i.e. steaming milk to make coffee), chosen by Mawson - Australia.

Object: A hammer. Chosen by Jang Bogo - Republic Of Korea.

Famous quote: "Things we lose have a way of coming back to us in the end. If not always in the way we expect." Luna Lovegood in "Harry Potter" by J.K.Rowling. Chosen by Neumayer III – Germany.

Famous character: Where’s Wally?. Chosen by Macquarie Island – Australia.

Action: Throw a bucket of water in the head. Chosen by Concordia - Italy & France.

Casey station submitted an entry called the One Million and One Year Ice Core which Warren features in.

Warren then took us on a tour of Casey station.

The audio comes in around the 7minute mark when Warren is showing us through the hospital.

There is a well equipped station hospital, operating theatre dental area, pharmacy and supplies.

There was the self service bar that included some interesting help yourself supplies!

Warren took the camera outside to see the sunset although WIFI was a bit dodgy outside.

We went through the survival packs and cold weather clothing and then into the living quarters and the mini operations centre.

Warren showed a remote radio console setup in the living area.

We had a weather report from the screens around the station.

The tour continued through the kitchen, the “catch and killö dinners and dining rooms and commented that there were 28 on station over the winter.

There was a small gym and quiet area, library and comfy chairs, theatre called the Odeon with about 16 terabytes of movies!

Warren then donned his cold weather gear and went from the big red shed to the operations centre.

Warren showed us the Hobby Hut along the way.

We then went into the Operations Centre where the met office, station leader’s office and comms office are located.

Warren took us through a detailed look at the comms office.

Warren then took questions from the audience about staffing - winter and summer numbers, tasks and different projects.

Again a huge thank you to Warren for taking the time to show us Casey station.
