ALARA Contest Results

The results for the ALARA contest 2022 are in. Just like the Remembrance Day contest we had great participation from VK7.

Congratulations to Linda VK7QP who was top scoring YL overall.

The Huon Scout Group had two entrants. The Eagles team led by Aiva VK7AKT top scored as Foundation Licence ALARA member overall. The other team, the Tigers, VK7HSD was top OM overall.

Last year, Lakia, VK7LJB along with Aiva on the mic, took out Top Scoring Foundation License trophy. Nice to see they both have received trophies for the hard work on air.

The Scouting section of the ALARA contest has only been running for 2 years & both times H.E.A.R.T. patrol members have scored well.

Awesome team work from the H.E.A.R.T. patrol. A special thanks to Brian, VK7BM for making it happen.

ALARA members Angela VK7FAMP and Andrea VK7AAC kept up the YL VK7 participation.

Thanks to the VK7 OMs who also joined in: Peter VK7KPC, Lee VK7LEE, Richard VK7ZBX, Ian VK7IF, Brian VK7BM and Paul VK7PEP.

The full results will be on the ALARA website soon.

Divisional History News
2023 Centenary Confirmed?

Last week we heard about how Linda Luther VK7QP had come across a Trove article in one of the archive boxes that potentially puts our Divisional History back a few years.

This story has sparked a number of responses from our historians Richard Roger VK7RO and Phil Corby VK7ZAX that include the following interesting facts…

WIA Tas did start in Hobart in 1923. Following the first AGM (at which some blood was spilt), the WIA HQ then moved to Launceston.

The Hobart radio club was set up (with "harmony their motto") and the WIA HQ moved back to Hobart.

The original Tasmanian Division in 1925 was formed as a company limited by guarantee under the old Tasmanian Companies Act of 1920. We had the registrarâ€Ös grace to dispense with the word ‘Limitedâ€Ö at the end of the name. After the Commonwealth took over Corporations law from the states we converted the Division to an incorporated association under the relevant Tasmanian Act in 1996.

Phil found an old Tas Division Bulletin from July 1972, announcing a VK7 Golden Jubilee award for 50 years of the WIA in Tasmania, 1923 to 1973. I have an idea that a history of the Tas. Divn may have been published in an AR magazine in April 1973 and we have been able to locate a copy.

The formation of a Launceston Branch took place in August 1923. Then on October 23rd 1924 the ‘Launceston Radio Experimenters Clubâ€Ö was formed, followed by the ‘Hobart Radio Experimenters Clubâ€Ö, later named ‘Hobart Radio Research Clubâ€Ö.

In August 1925 the second Federal Convention was held in Perth. I understand that this was attended by Phil Fysh, 7PF, who was one of the driving forces in Tasmania for formation of a Federal body. On Sept 3rd 1925 a meeting was held in Launceston to reform the WIA Tasmanian Division which “had become almost defunctâ€. The subscribers to the original incorporation documents in 1925 were all Launceston residents.

We have been able to locate the Amateur Radio April 1973 article on the VK7 Golden Jubilee and will be featuring elements of in future broadcasts.

Thanks to Linda VK7QP, Richard VK7RO and Phil VK7ZAX for digging this history up and it looks like we will certainly be celebrating the centenary of the VK7 Division of the Wireless Institute of Australia in June 2023.

Watch this space!

WIA Spring VHF/UHF Field Day

It's time to get ready for the WIA Spring VHF/UHF field day. This year it will be on from 01:00 UTC Saturday 26 through till 00:59 UTC Sunday 27 November 2022.

There are a number of sections and then sub sections so there is something for everybody. Broadly speaking there are two main streams of participants, those that are happy to pack up a fair bit of their shack, associated bits and bobs, then reassemble it in some remote spot, discover they have forgot to pack "something", brave or enjoy the weather and conditions, supply power, make some contacts then do the reverse and pack it all up take it home, and those that are not quite that mad and operate from the comfort of their shack. Then there are the Rovers. They are special individuals as they move about and repeat the portable things all over the place.

It's a great day of fun and there will be many people out and about so why not allocate some time to come on and exchange some numbers that weekend. You can rework stations after 2 hours. The usual logging programs support the contest and you will need to determine your 6 digit maidenhead square locator from your operating location and there are many smartphone apps to help obtain this.

Checkout the WIA website for all the rules and other information.

https://www.wia.org.au/members/contests/vhfuhf/

If anyone would like some help with any aspect of the field day I am happy to offer assistance, along with the wealth of knowledge and experience of other members, just reach out and weâ€Öll do what we can to assist.

Here's hoping for a great Spring Day, hear you on the bands.

We've had a fantastic response to the event from our mainland VK and ZL friends, with more than half of the attendees making the trip down to attend - some for the very first time.

Our registration deadline is COB on the 31st of October 2022. This gives the organisers time to get lanyards, showbags and organisation in place to give attendees a great experience at the Conference and expo.

Now it's time for VK7 to step up! Have you booked your tickets yet? If not, why not? We can guarantee this event is not to be missed - there are more surprises and news in the pipeline, so stay tuned!

Please take a moment to reflect on the considerable effort that has gone into planning, arranging and coordinating this event and to make it an enjoyable experience for all who attend. We have some awesome raffle prizes to be won - and you're in the running just for attending!

REAST will have a table available for members to sell the odds and ends you may have lying around the shack at the expo on Sunday. You will need to attend the expo in person to utilize this. Please label your equipment appropriately and see Larry VK7WLH who is arranging this on the day.

Many have taken a lot of time to dedicate toward making the event a success, but the only way we can make that happen is if VK7's turn out in droves!!!

So... what are you waiting for? Register Now!

The deadline for registrations is COB on 31 October 2022.

NEWS FROM THE NORTH WEST
North West Tasmania Amateur Radio Club
Bar B Que and Fox Hunt

A Bar-B-Que and Fox Hunt is to be held on Saturday the 22nd October 2022.

We plan to start with a Bar B Que commencing at Midday at Legion Park, which is off The Esplanade behind the Showgrounds at West Ulverstone.

Legion Park is accessed by turning East into Maud Street off Queen Street, taking the road to the river and BBQ facilities.

This is a BYO food & drinks event and there are two electric BBQ, toilets, running water and some seating and tables under cover on site.

At 2pm, if there are sufficient numbers, we will commence the Fox Hunt, which will be along the style of the old-fashioned CB Fox hunts, where the Foxâ€Ös hides, and then the chasers using signal strengthâ€Ös and clues, attempt to locate the Fox.

The person who finds the Fox, then goes and hides, and we start the chase again. To assist any amateur to participate, it will be run on Channel 50, 146.500 MHz and operate in the Ulverstone Township.

We will continue while there are chasers for the Fox. If the weather is inclement, Eric VK7EV will be on 2m VK7RMD in the morning, to advise if event is still proceeding. If canceled we may reschedule to the following Saturday.

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated

www.ntarc.net

Last Wednesday, NTARC held its October general meeting. Considering the state of the weather we probably had a better than hoped for turn up of hardy club members. Even though there was a substantial amount of correspondence to cover from the previous two months, the agenda was again worked through in a timely manner. After the meeting, first some sustenance then, back into the setting up of the club rooms in readiness for the weekends coming Scout event.

JOTA/JOTI 2022 as we all know, it is the worldâ€Ös largest single Scout event, these days taking place both online and over the air. As this news goes to air many amateurs around Australia and across the world will be busy assisting scout groups. However if it is still Sunday when you are listening to this broadcast and the “Once in a Hundred Years†weather event having happened for the second time in six years hasnâ€Öt caused the cancellation, remember any assistance at the club rooms or on air would still be greatly appreciated.

Mainly for the operation of transceivers set up for voice chat by the participants.

Assembly of Morse code trainer kits, (no soldering required only a screw driver).

Sending and receiving each otherâ€Ös names by Morse code on the practice keys. (No, not live to air).

Local contacts to chat with the kids in case we canâ€Öt link up to other Scout venues would also be appreciated, so if you hear a VK7TAZ call then feel free to jump in and have a chat and help out. The last group through is expected to be about 3 pm Sunday.

Last year showed some very dedicated home station operators both local and from the North West that donated massive amounts of their time to talk to the young operators, this brought obvious smiles of excitement to their faces or, “what do I sayâ€, panic to their faces. From us at the club room end of things, trust me your interactions were very much appreciated. Hopefully this year we can all spread the load a little!

Next week Iâ€Öm sure our member Peter Dodd, VK7KPC, in his capacity as Project Commissioner Radio and Electronics, Scouts Tasmania will provide us all with an update of events that occurred in Tasmania and hopefully some greater detail on the activity at the NTARC JOTA/JOTI station.

Equine Endurance event - The State Championships at Santarena Park, Scottsdale at the end of November is coming up rapidly. This is a tentative request for additional crew members to help us handle this twenty four hour event. Please advise if you are able to assist by emailing Roger, VK7ARN or catch up with the Secretary at a Coffee Morning or Tech Session.

Tassie Ham Expo in November - The club has decided to combine the Coffee Morning and Technical Night donations for the month of October. Our aim is to purchase some new items that can be donated to the Tassie Ham Conference / Expo in November, they will be added to the pool of raffle prizes. So next Coffee Morning or Tech Night feel free to bring along any old change or bank notes that you no longer have a use for and pass them on to this good amateur cause.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Club Technical night - Wednesday 19th October. Held at the NTARC Club rooms, 7.30pm until late.

TestNet and TechNet – Wednesday 26th October. TestNet/CW course on 3.580MHz from 7pm till 7.30pm….and a TechNet on 3.567MHz from 7.30pm till about 8.30pm. Your host for the evening will be Nic VK7WW.

SSTV Net - Held every Thursday night on the 70cm repeater, VK7RJG and linked to the South via repeater VK7RAF. Conducted from about 7.30pm. These SSTV images will be available on the NTARC website under ‘Blogsâ€Ö.

Coffee Morning - held every Friday in the NTARC Club rooms. Get warm while you catch up, time is from 10am to noon and we look forward to seeing you all there. We currently have QSL cards awaiting collection, so why not pop in, check the QSL box and join us for a cuppa and chat. Remember, door proceeds will go to the November Ham Expo!

The club is following the Covid 19 suggestion to continue wearing face masks when gathering.

FINALLY – A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, no matter how trivial, then please email them to the Secretary at the following address news(at)ntarc.net all items to be received no later than 5pm on the Friday prior to the Broadcast.

Remember equipment photos and radio propagation maps are available on the NTARC web site under “Blogs†for this weekâ€Ös broadcast.

Thatâ€Ös all folks,

73 from Stefan, VK7ZSB, Secretary NTARC.

October Presentation
Antennas and Ground Planes

We started the day with yummy BYO BBQ and the went into the presentation. The original theme of military radios and antennas day morphed into a more practically focused Portable Antennas and Ground Planes demonstration.

Kim Briggs VK7KB took us through his box of magic devices including many great antenna and power ideas with the different types of Anderson connections up to the size that takes hundreds of amps of current!

Kim outlined the cute little QMac antenna tuner and he had the very nice mechanism that moves the ferrite in and out of the coil inductor. Kim also showed the other long wire antennas that QMac produced to use with the ATU.

Kim also showed a very nice portable solar panel and regulator arrangement that supplied quite a few amps for portable WWFF operation.

We then moved to a practical demonstration of the effect that increasing the number of ground plane wires has on effective radiation angle with a vertical antenna.

Kim had rescued a Potomac 0-5MHz professional field strength meter from a skip bin that he fixed and connected to a vertical antenna on a tripod and tuned the FSM to 936 ABC Hobart with no ground plane wires. The field strength was measured and then a sequence of 2, 4, 8 and 16 approximately quarter wave length ground plane wires where connected and the FSM reading noted.

As you add ground plane wires the theory tells you that the effective radiation angle of a vertical antenna lowers making it a better DX antenna. The difference between zero and 16 ground plane wires was about 1dB in field strength so it appears to follow the theory.

Thanks to Kim for the demonstration and a video of the day will appear on the REAST YouTube channel in the near future.

DATV Experimenter's Night

https://fb.me/e/1MughsG2V

We started our DATV Experimenterâ€Ös night with Richard VK7ZBX in the studio and Richard was very excited to have heard his own echoes off the moon and well and contact a number of amateur via 10GHz EME operation.

Richard showed a video of the 10GHz EME beacon in high power mode and you can actually hear the tones of the WSJTX signal. Thanks Richard.

We reminded everyone of the ACMA Class Licence Consultation that is currently happening and then went into the latest idea behind the creation of a high performance magnetic loop antenna.

https://miguelvaca.github.io/vk3cpu/magloop.html

Our next segment was a review of the latest DUBUS magazine including an extensive article by David Minchin VK5KK on his 122/134GHz transceiver design. David will be talking about this design at the Tassie Ham Conference on Nov 5th.

https://www.reast.asn.au/news-events/tassie-ham-radio-conference-and-expo/

We then reviewed the Latest Low-Key magazine.

https://vkqrpclub.org/

We finished with a promotion of the Tassie Ham Radio Conference and Expo and remonded everyone that the new ICOM IC-905 will be making its VK debut at the Expo.

We look forward to seeing you at the Conference and / or Expo.

This coming Wednesday night is another DATV Experimenterâ€Ös night and we will be looking at a bunch of interesting equipment - historic and new and have reports on JOTA activities and much more.

We streaming the nights on the REAST YouTube channel.
