Jamboree on the Air
NW JOTA report

This year Club Members manned two JOTA sites, at Burnie Scout Headquarters with VK7LSB, VK7DC and Matt and at Paton Park Scout Camp with VK7HSC, VK7BYL, VK7WP, VK7AAQ and VK7GS.

Due to a bereavement related to the Spreyton Scouts, that group didnt proceed with JOTA.

Most of the activity was on 2m & 70cm, as HF conditions were poor, but contact was made on 20M with JOTA sites in Queensland. Unfortunately, the vegetation had grown around the Paton Park site, blocking the GSM signal to enable the DMR modem to operate.

Numbers were down at all sites which maybe related to school holidays, and the inclement weather.

Members attending were able to assist Joeys, Cubs and Scouts to make radio contact with other JOTA sites, which is the aim of the event.

A big thank you to club members that set up the facilities and participated.

Northern JOTA Report

Last weekend saw 77 attendees pass through the NTARC club rooms for our part in the 65th JOTA and 26th JOTI Jamboree. Saturdays weather was kind to us and the pauses in the rain seemed to coincide with whenever we had a group outside fox hunting. Peter VK7KPC will cover the state wide event in detail next broadcast. I would like to thank everybody who helped at the club rooms and especially those external to us that took the time to talk via radio when there were no Scouts available, thank you Shirley VK7HSC, Brendan VK7VIP, Lewis VK7IT and at least one other that I cant recall, sorry but things were pretty hectic at times and my grey matter has failed me.

Southern JOTA Report

The domain JOTA event was attended by 3 Joey Scouts, 2 Cub scouts, and leaders from the Howrah and Mount Stuart groups.

The morse code display was the most popular activity.

We weren't able to make contact via radio at the time the Joeys and Cubs attended, but we did make contact via EchoLink on my network radio, where they were able to talk to Cubs and Scouts in Queensland, and some were even lucky enough to speak to scouting people in Brazil and the USA.

Divisional History News
2023 Centenary History

As outlined last week we have confirmed that the VK7 Amateur Radio Centenary will be held in June 2023.

In June 1923 the WIA Tasmanian Division was formed following a series of meetings and we have sourced some great background history from an article that was written by Lon Jensen VK7LJ (SK) titled “Tasmania celebrates its Golden Jubilee” in April 1973 in AR Magazine.

“Mr. A. Harold Masters Architect , Electrician and Lecturer in Electrical Engineering at the Launceston Technical College is credited with being the first in Tasmania to demonstrate communications by means of Wireless Telegraphy.

These experiments took place prior to 1900, probably late 1898 or 1899. Later in 1906 he carried out two way experiments with H.M.S. Pioneer both in the Tamar River and along the northwest coast of Tasmania using Telefunken equipment obtained from Melbourne. There are few details available but apparently there was two way contact along the coast.

Mr Masters signals were, however, heard when the ship was near Devonport. Some of the frame aerials belonging to this equipment are being held for the Institutes Museum. They consist of copper birdcage wire netting attached to a metal cross about 3 feet across and were apparently mounted horizontally one above the other.

The Patron of the Tasmanian Division was L. J. CROOKS. VK7BQ

First licensed in 1925.

Mr. F W Medhurat (“Pop”) who was later VK7AH was also experimenting with 12” and 14” spark coils in Hobart. Mr. Medhurst and Mr Hallam who were both members of the PMGs Department in Hobart were successful in communicating with HMS St. George which was one of the ships accompanying the Duke of York on his visit to Australia to open Federal Parliament. A number of successful contacts were carried out with the ship both in the Derwent estuary and on the east coast of Tasmania. The greatest distance over which communication was carried out was about 60 miles. The vessel has previously been contacted by Mr. H W Jenvey (father of Bill VK2ZO) at the entrance to Port Philip heads on May 6th 1901. These achievements are all the more noteworthy when it is remembered that they took place some six months before Marconi successfully spanned the Atlantic.

The Marconi Company erected stations at East Devonport Tasmania and Queenscliff Victoria in 1905-06. The stations were opened for traffic on July 12th 1906 with the exchange of messages between Prime Minister, Governors of the States and other dignitaries. It is probably however that the first contact across Bass Strait took place during experiments conducted by the engineers late in 1905.”

We will continue this VK7 history from VK7 Golden Jubilee article next week.

Thanks to Linda VK7QP, Richard VK7RO and Phil VK7ZAX for digging this history up. We will be running historial articles leading up to the celebrations in June 2023.

Watch this space!

Contest News
WIA Spring VHF/UHF Field Day

It's time to get ready for the WIA Spring VHF/UHF field day. This year it will be on from 01:00 UTC Saturday 26 through till 00:59 UTC Sunday 27 November 2022.

There are a number of sections and then sub sections so there is something for everybody. Broadly speaking there are two main streams of participants, those that are happy to pack up a fair bit of their shack, associated bits and bobs, then reassemble it in some remote spot, discover they have forgot to pack "something", brave or enjoy the weather and conditions, supply power, make some contacts then do the reverse and pack it all up take it home, and those that are not quite that mad and operate from the comfort of their shack. Then there are the Rovers. They are special individuals as they move about and repeat the portable things all over the place.

It's a great day of fun and there will be many people out and about so why not allocate some time to come on and exchange some numbers that weekend. You can rework stations after 2 hours. The usual logging programs support the contest and you will need to determine your 6 digit maidenhead square locator from your operating location and there are many smartphone apps to help obtain this.

Checkout the WIA website for all the rules and other information.

https://www.wia.org.au/members/contests/vhfuhf/

If anyone would like some help with any aspect of the field day I am happy to offer assistance, along with the wealth of knowledge and experience of other members, just reach out and well do what we can to assist.

Here's hoping for a great Spring Day, hear you on the bands.

Statewide News
Updated SSTVCam - 2m - Southern Tasmania

The following comes from Ken VK7KRJ and is an update on his vk7 2m sstv page which is now finished (as much as any of these projects are ever truly finished...) and running fully automatically 24/7 with it's own dedicated receiver.

The receiver is listening to the 146.650MHz repeater (repeater one to my generation.), so people can now send pictures through the repeater at any time and check them at the address on the email edition of this broadcast.

https://sstv.vk7krj.com/scrolling web gallery.html or Vk7krj.com and follow the links.

The page now resizes itself to fit on all the devices I have been able to test it on (phones, laptops, desktops) and also resizes all the pictures to the same size regardless of the transmitted mode, getting round the problem of the various pd modes showing as different sizes and messing up the page, especially on smaller screens.

Now if we could get the repeater timeouts extended to 300 seconds, that would also fix the problem of timeout when anyone sends pd290 pictures (290 seconds), following the maxim- equipment should be tailored to usage- not vice-versa.

Thursday Night SSTV Nets

Another great night that saw the following participants VK7s – ZAB, TED, WP, ZCF, ZBX, ZSB and ZIR all sharing nearly forty photos.

There were various subjects like:

    • Trees, sunsets, back yard swing sets and a large Dinosaur climb on structure at Riverbend Park

    • Waterways and a very wet driveway

    • Antenna installations from a VHF array on a vehicle mounted pneumatic mast through to the Beacons at Don Heads, VK7RAE

    • Cars and motor bikes all nicely captioned with brand and model numbers for those of us that dont immediately recognise them

    • A nice pair of carburettors with size 40 millimetre throttle bores

    • A Birthday cake where time is slipping away

Thanks to Ken, VK7KRJ for further work on his fully automatic 24/7 monitoring site. Now anyone can send pictures at anytime and check them on the page almost immediately.

A reminder in Southern Tasmania, VK7RAF (146.650 -600kHz) can be used both locally and linked to VK7RJG by using different CTCSS tones. 123Hz for local Southern operation and 141.3Hz for linking RAF to VK7RJG (438.55 -7MHz).

Also to minimise repeater time outs I recommend no DX type modes.

We get underway from around 7:30pm.

NEWS FROM THE NORTH WEST
North West Tasmania Amateur Radio Club
Bar B Que and Fox Hunt

A Bar-B-Que and Fox Hunt is to be held on Saturday the 22nd October 2022.

We plan to start with a Bar B Que commencing at Midday at Legion Park, which is off The Esplanade behind the Showgrounds at West Ulverstone.

Legion Park is accessed by turning East into Maud Street off Queen Street, taking the road to the river and BBQ facilities.

This is a BYO food & drinks event and there are two electric BBQ, toilets, running water and some seating and tables under cover on site.

At 2pm, if there are sufficient numbers, we will commence the Fox Hunt, which will be along the style of the old-fashioned CB Fox hunts, where the Foxs hides, and then the chasers using signal strengths and clues, attempt to locate the Fox.

The person who finds the Fox, then goes and hides, and we start the chase again. To assist any amateur to participate, it will be run on Channel 50, 146.500 MHz and operate in the Ulverstone Township.

We will continue while there are chasers for the Fox. If the weather is inclement, Eric VK7EV will be on 2m VK7RMD in the morning, to advise if event is still proceeding. If canceled we may reschedule to the following Saturday.
VK7BY has moved QTH

Bob VK7BY was residing at the nursing home in Somerset, but has moved to the Nursing Home - Synovum Care in Wynyard.

This is the home VK7KEV Kevin is residing in, Bob and Kevin have been best mates for years, so they are enjoying one anothers company and sitting together during meal times, there are plans to set up Bob with a HandHeld, to access the Table Cape repeaters once he has settled in.

Wednesdays Clubroom Technical night was a much quieter affair in comparison. Even though Peter VK7KPC had a couple of hectic days over the weekend in his JOTA /JOTI capacity he still managed to turn up early at the Clubrooms bringing with him some interesting ex-military equipment in the form of a “Control Group AN / GRA-6” setup. This equipment was manufactured by an unusually named company called “Plated Wires & Electronics Inc.” of Ansonia, Connecticut.

The setup comprised two units, “Local” and “Remote”. These two units are interconnected by a one pair telephone line and could be separated by at least 3 Km. In field telephone mode they can call each other by winding the crank handle mounted on the front panel of each unit and talk as normal using the handsets. The “Local” unit also contains interconnecting cables that plug into one or two Transmitter Receiver combinations. It could control the transmitters individually or combined. If the “Local” unit was switched to “Remote” mode the transmitters could be controlled at least 3 Km away by the remote unit.

This allowed the radio operator to site the radio set on a hill, then retreat to a safer spot and operate his set via the GRA-6. Also two sets could be interconnected via the GRA-6, on different frequencies, to act as a radio relay. Thank you Peter for bringing these units along and setting them up for us to try using.

A link for more information is included in the text version of this broadcast.

https://www.radionerds.com/images/3/30/TM_11-5038_1951.pdf

Ross VK7ALH brought in the matching external power supply unit for his Yaesu FT-200 transceiver which was also displayed at a recent technical night, both units were from the early 70s.

The external power supply add on was locally manufactured in Australian by Bail Electronic Services and incorporated a very substantial A&R mains transformer, rectifiers and regulation. The unit also included a reasonable sized inbuilt loud speaker. It was in restoration mode and the exposed top side of the chassis showed the classic white corrosion of the passivated zinc, luckily the underside or business end was in surprisingly good condition sporting very clean Elna electrolytic capacitors, which were probably originals.

Bail Electronic Services had been the Australian factory representatives and specialists in Yaesu amateur communication equipment from 1963, at least ten years prior to the Dick Smith stores. Thanks Ross.

Ian, VK7IG as hoped, brought in his small WSPR transmitter module made by ZachTeck of Sweden. I was expecting just the module but he has been industrious! Ian has purchased a weather proof 240Volt power board hinged plastic enclosure from a popular hardware store and has used this enclosure as the basis for a portable self-contained unit. A lithium vehicle “jump start” battery unit with USB sockets provides the power, the WSPR module is about the size of a cigarette packet and there is still plenty of room for a possible power amplifier module plus filters. Even the cables can coil up with-in the case. Just connect an antenna and you have at least three days of run time. I believe that this weekends projected rain will be the water proof test. Fingers crossed and congratulations on a nice build Ian.

Lionel VK7ZLB, produced from his pocket what appeared at first glance to look like a standard off the shelf spark plug, and yes it was made by a current spark plug manufacturer, K.L.G.

It was indeed made from porcelain, however the “Gap” end was a solder-able post and the “Spark plug lead end” was threaded shaft complete with a nut, which could be used to tighten onto a lug or wire conductor. The entire unit could easily be secured through a bulkhead or chassis panel using the provided large nut. It was effectively a high voltage or RF insulated feed through.

The man behind K.L.G. was Kenelm Lee Guinness. He started manufacturing “Sparking Plugs” in 1912, yes I did say “Sparking Plugs”, as they were once called. K.L.G. started production in a disused Inn or Pub and very quickly earned a reputation for incredible reliability. So much so that during World War 1 the entire factory output was reserved by the War Ministry for the exclusive use in aircraft. Over one hundred and ten years of manufacturing and still going strong!

Discussions roamed freely but one subject that I had not really considered since the demise of the daytime AM broadcast band in Launceston to “Junk Status” was crystal sets! In particular Burnie VK7BRs question, did anybody know of a good FM Crystal set design? That stumped things for a while, it would be nice to listen to something intelligent on a crystal set again. After a fair bit of web searching and some interesting designs Lionel, VK7ZLB has taken up the challenge to look into the subject. I think I will also do some research before next Technical night. As eleven oclock was rapidly approaching the remaining few decided to call it a night and go home as one of us had to get up for work at 04:30!

Equine Endurance event - The State Championships at Santarena Park, Scottsdale on the 18th & 19th of November is coming up rapidly. This is a request for additional crew members to help us handle this twenty four hour event starting at midnight. Please advise if you are able to assist for any length of time by emailing Roger, VK7ARN or catch up with the Secretary at a Coffee Morning or Tech Session.

Tassie Ham Expo in November - The club has decided to combine the Coffee Morning and Technical Night donations for the month of October. Our aim is to purchase some new items that can be donated to the Tassie Ham Conference / Expo in November, they will be added to the pool of raffle prizes. So next Coffee Morning or Tech Night feel free to bring along any old change or bank notes that you no longer have a use for and pass them on to this good amateur cause.

UPCOMING EVENTS
