RAOTC
Broadcast for December

Further to that mentioned on the WIA National News, this is another reminder about the RAOTC broadcast for Monday the 5th of December 2022 at 8pm local time; thatâ€Ös tomorrow night for those listening on Sunday.

The RAOTC is still looking for an assistant news compiler due to the retirement of Bill Roper.

A review of the November committee meeting includes the announcement that Rodney Champness VK3UG, SK was chosen as the recipient of the Stewart Day award for his 3-part series on Radio Australia, Shepparton.

The first of 2 historic articles was originally written by Col VK1AU SK. Members might remember Col as a regular contributor to both AR Magazine and OTN Journal. This story is titled ‘Ugly Duckling Liberty Shipâ€Ö. Col dispels a myth that the fleet of wartime ships sometimes known as ‘ugly ducklingsâ€Ö were of American design; they were in fact based on a British prototype the Empire Liberty and mass produced in the USA.

The second article tells the amazing story of Nicholas Alkemade (December 1922 –June 1987); he was a British tail gunner in the Royal Air Force during World War II who survived a freefall of 18,000 feet (5,490 m) without a parachute after abandoning his out-of-control, burning Avro Lancaster heavy bomber over Germany.

Listen at 8 pm Monday, local time, over the VK7RAA network in the north, VK7RAD in the Hobart area or at about 8:30pm as a telecast on VK7AX ‘Spectrum Tasmaniaâ€Ö via the BATC membersâ€Ö stream or in the Ulverstone area on 445.50MHz DATV. Audio feed is available on VK7RDR, 439.775MHz, Dazzler Range.

The date again is December 5th. Call backs will follow on all 3 networks. Please call in if you are able; this provides the RAOTC broadcast committee with an idea of how many are listening to these broadcasts.

If you miss the off-air broadcasts you can listen to the audio file on the RAOTC website.

Thursday Night SSTV Nets

Another great SSTV net night that saw the following participants VK7s – ZBX, FGGT, ZAB, KPC, TED, and PD all sharing twelve photos.

There were various subjects like:

Messages in the clouds including QRZ?

A highly polished HF magnetic loop antenna

24 GHz portable equipment on Mt Wellington

3.4 GHz portable equipment on Mt Barrow

Some of the latest weather satellite decodes for Tasmania

    Nice balcony plant display

Someone off to work that looked more like an enjoyable tourist ride – itâ€Ös lucky for some

Remember Kenâ€Ös, VK7KRJâ€Ös fully automatic 24/7 monitoring site allows anyone who has sent an SSTV picture the ability to check them on his page almost immediately, any time, both South and North Tasmania.

A reminder in Southern Tasmania, VK7RAF (146.650 -600kHz) can be used both locally and linked to VK7RJG by using different CTCSS tones. 123Hz for local Southern operation and 141.3Hz for linking RAF to VK7RJG (438.55 -7MHz).

We get underway from around 7:30pm.

DATV Experimenter's Night

https://fb.me/e/1MughsG2V

We started the program last Wednesday night with Justin VK7TW who recently had the privilege of seeing an actual Medhurst Field Telephone. Justin went through some background on F.W. “Pop†Medhurst who was a giant of amateur radio and electrical works from late 1800.

On July 2 1901 - Pop made contact with a navy vessel accompanying the Duchess and Duke of York for the opening of the first Federal parliament via spark transmitter - from Blinking Billy Point. Winston VK7EM has recently put this story on his Facebook Page.

Pop was a telegraphist in Chobham Post Office in Surrey UK where he first met Alexander Graham Bell who was visiting from US - Bell invited him to accompany him back to US but parents refused - they continued to correspond.

Through a romantic relationship Pop came to Melbourne and gained employment with the Post and Telegraph Dept in 1891 and was posted to Hobart as Telegraphist and Mechanic.

Pop supervised the installation of Southern Tasmania rural telephone lines - he devised a system where telegraph and telephone signals could be sent over the same wire - post and telegraph sent him to Qld to install there.

In 1906 Pop retired from the post of chief mechnician at the post and telegraph dept and designed and built a lightweight Field Telephone - it had 150 mile range - weighed only four pounds but failed to impress the war office but the international telephone company was interested. Pop took out many patents for the device.

Justin then showed the pictures of the field telephone and showed the Australian Historical Telephony Society document along with photos and the circuit from the article on the field telephone. Pop Medhurst died in 1948 and left an electrified edison cylinder player with auto changer he designed, many vintage radios and a converted penny farthing front wheel that was a wind generator

Justin then showed some interesting advertising from the 1950's from a magazine that featured an article on Harry Medhurst's retirement from the Medhurst company.

Justin outlined the arrangements that are being made for the VK7 Centenary in June 2023.

We then welcomed Warren VK0WN/VK7WN back to Tasmania after spending many months at Casey Station in Antarctica. We went through some of the interesting points from his time down South.

We then brought Richard VK7ZBX and Murray VK7ZMS into the studio and discussed the VHF/UHF Spring Field Day.

https://www.wia.org.au/members/contests/vhfuhf/

We finished up with a reminder of future events.

We will have a fortnight recess of the DATV Experimenterâ€Ös nights as this week is the End of Year BBQ.

Project to map Australia's telecommunications resilience

A first-of-its-kind project, led by The Australian National University (ANU) and funded by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts (DITRDCA), will holistically map the resilience of Australiaâ€Ös telecommunications sector.

ANU Vice-Chancellor Professor Brian Schmidt noted that telecommunications underpins every other sector in the Australian economy, stating, “Telecommunications drives economic growth, national productivity and innovation and keeps Australians connected to each other and the world.

“When telecommunications and digital services go down, Australia and Australians grind to a halt.

“Iâ€Öm pleased to announce the ANU Tech Policy Design Centre will lead an independent study into the resilience of the sector. This is an issue of vital importance to the nation and all Australians.â€

The ANU-led project will engage stakeholders from across governments, industry, utility providers, emergency services, the risk and disaster management community, and academia to develop a comprehensive risk and resilience profile of Australiaâ€Ös telecommunications sector.

“The 2019–20 bushfires, the pandemic, floods and cyber incidents are just a few examples of recent events that have tested the resilience of the sector,†said project lead Professor Johanna Weaver, Director of the ANU Tech Policy Design Centre.

“In some instances â€ö including during the pandemic â€ö the sector shone. On other occasions, its resilience has been found wanting. There is a lot to learn from each of these events.

“By studying risks at the sector level, this project will equip future decision-makers with the tools to design effective policy that minimises disruption and improves the resilience of this essential infrastructure which Australians depend on every day.â€

The project will take an ‘all-hazards approachâ€Ö, encompassing natural disasters, systemic failures and human-driven disruption. It will also examine positive case studies, such as how the sector kept Australians connected in the face of unprecedented network demand during COVID.

Deputy Secretary Richard Windeyer said the DITRDCA is pleased to support the project.

“The project will provide an independent evidence base to inform future Australian government decisions,†he said. “It will provide a valuable evidence base to increase the resilience of Australiaâ€Ös telecommunications sector as a whole. It will be an invaluable tool for individual firms to prepare their own risk and resilience plans.â€

The project aligns with Infrastructure Australiaâ€Ös 2021 Australian Infrastructure Plan and lessons from the Royal Commission into National Natural Disaster Arrangements 2020. Indeed, the CEO of the Communications Alliance industry association, John Stanton, said the telco sector is already keenly engaged in the project and welcomes the opportunity it provides to build on existing industry initiatives.

“Australiaâ€Ös communications networks have stood up well to the unprecedented challenges thrown at them in recent years by natural and malevolent threats,†he said.

“Telco carriers have strengthened key network infrastructure and backup capabilities and improved coordination with emergency authorities and key stakeholders such as the energy industry.

“The work being led by ANU experts will, we believe, add value to that vital ongoing mission.â€
