During the day yesterday, August 27, 2026, multiple minor earthquakes were recorded in different Central American countries, officially reported by local seismological agencies:
El Salvador and Guatemala
El Salvador Border / Guatemala: A magnitude 3.5 quake occurred at 19:11 (local time), with a depth of 11.72 km. The epicenter was located in Salvadoran territory but very close to the department of Jutiapa, Guatemala. It was reported jointly by the INSIVUMEH of Guatemala and the MARN of El Salvador.
Volcanoes de Guatemala: Volcanic monitoring recorded internal micro-seismic activity with 4 earthquakes up to 3.3 magnitude in the Agua volcano and a 3.0 earthquake in the Pacaya volcano.
San Salvador: The MARN investigated a series of reumbs and local vibrations in the Metropolitan Area of San Salvador, although they were attributed to minor geological adjustments and not to a major earthquake.
Costa Rica and Panama
Costa Rica border / Panama: Earthquake of magnitude 2.9 at 4:37 AM (local time), located 46 km west of Río Sereno (in Costa Rican territory), with a depth of 8 km. It was verified by the Institute of Geosciences of the University of Panama.
Panama (Guna Yala): Earthquake of magnitude 3.4 at 3:22 AM (local time), located 64 km east of Gaigirgordub, with a very shallow depth of 3 km.
Panama (San Blas): Earthquake of magnitude 3.0 at 1:46 AM (local time) in the Panamanian Caribbean region.
Honduras and Nicaragua
Honduras (Yojoa Volcano): Minor internal activity was detected with an instrumental earthquake of magnitude 3.0 in the vicinity of the volcanic zone of Yojoa.
None of the events that occurred yesterday caused material damage or human loss in the Central American region.
