he National Hurricane Center (NHC) indicates that no tropical cyclone or storm
formation is expected in the North Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, or Gulf region over the
next 7 days. Strong vertical wind shear and dry air driven by a dominant El Niño
pattern are actively suppressing storm development across the basin, leading to a
much quieter peak season than historically normal.
Despite the lack of organized tropical cyclones or hurricanes, Central America is still
experiencing high tropical instability. The regional outlook and safety impacts for the
immediate future include
## Current Regional Outlook & Hazards
* Active Tropical Waves: There are currently 4 unorganized tropical waves moving
westward across the Atlantic basin. While they face highly unfavorable conditions
for intensifying into named storms, they are dumping massive amounts of tropical
moisture across Central America.
* Local Flood Threats: The main threat to the region is heavy, non-cyclonic rainfall
rather than wind damage. Strong tropical wavesâ€ösuch as Tropical Wave No. 33
interacting with the Pacific Monsoon Troughâ€öare driving severe downpours.
* Costa Rica Emergencies: The National Emergencies Commission (CNE) has placed
the Northern Zone, Caribbean Slope, and Turrialba under an Alerta Naranja (Orange Alert)
due to extreme soil saturation, severe local flooding, and landslide risks, forcing
hundreds of preventive evacuations. The rest of Costa Rica remains under a Yellow Alert.
*
## Seasonal Context
Forecasting agencies like [NOAA] and [Colorado State University (CSU) maintain that the 2026
Atlantic hurricane season will remain well below normal, estimating only around 8 to 14 total
named storms for the entire year due to El Niño wind shear.
