The [National Hurricane Center (NHC)](https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/?epac) indicates that no active tropical cyclones are
currently threatening Central America from the Pacific, and no tropical storm or hurricane formation is expected near
the region over the next 7 days. While the 2026 Pacific hurricane season has been highly active overall due to an
intensifying El Niño, the current storm activity (such as Tropical Storm Lala) is situated far out in the Central
Pacific, well away from the American mainland.
Despite the lack of named cyclones near the coast, the Pacific basin is driving substantial indirect threats to
Central America through a highly active [Pacific Monsoon Trough]. The current regional outlook and localized coastal hazards include:

directly across the Central American coastline. This interaction generates daily heavy downpours and strong afternoon

* Flash Floods & Mudslides: Ongoing heavy rains have heavily saturated the mountainous soils of the Pacific slope. The
primary risk across the region remains non-cyclonic flash flooding and sudden mudslides rather than high wind damage.
* Costa Rica Alerts: The Pacific side of Costa Rica remains under a Yellow Alert (Alerta Amarilla) issued by emergency
authorities due to expected heavy, organized afternoon thunderstorms and localized street flooding.

According to seasonal outlooks from NOAA and , the 2026 Pacific season is experiencing above-normal to historically strong
activity. An exceptionally strong El Niño eventâ€öwith a 69œhance of reaching historic intensityâ€öis providing anomalously
warm sea surface temperatures and favorable low-shear environments across the broader Pacific basin, which will likely keep
the region prone to rapid storm development through October.
