VK7BD Bernard passed away on the 29th July this year after a short illness.
Bernard obtained his amateur licence in 1978 as VK2NUU, he then held ZL1TTH while in New Zealand from 1987 until 1989. When he returned to Australia, he became VK2FZH. Bernard moved to Ontario Canada using a VE3 callsign in 1990, then moving to Bakersfield California in the USA, as KD6FZH, and then moving to Las Vegas as KO6MD. When he returned to Australia, he held VK4JBD from 2004 till 2007, and VK2JBD from 2007 till 2011. Bernard then returned to Tasmania and held the callsign VK7BD on his passing.
His elevated QTH at Somerset assisted with his amateur hobby. Bernard was a longtime member of the Australian Radio DX Club. He enjoyed all the bands as well as being active on DMR.
Bernardâ€Ös other hobby was astronomy, and he had a keen interest in football, basketball and horse racing. And enjoyed cruising with his wife Veronica.

VK Contest News
RD contest 2025.
Well that time of the year has rolled around once again, time for all the operators in VK7 to band together to have a crack at the RD Contest.
The RD or Remembrance Day contest is a unique contest that does many things. It commemorates the ultimate sacrifice made by amateurs during WW2. It encourages a friendly competition atmosphere where everyone is encouraged to participate and join together to make a united effort for their state as either individuals or as a team of up to 3 operators for bragging rights and oh, a nice big trophy for the state that wins.
This year the contest runs from 16th August 03:00 UTC till 17th August 03:00 UTC.
There are many sections to enter that should cover everyone's preferences for bands and modes.
Of course a very important part of the contest is logging and there has been some movement in this area of late. The much loved and used VKCL is still OK to use but there have been some reported issues with some of the contest submission conditions. There are various other programs and of course some still use a paper log and then transpose into a log later. The contest manager has recommended that participants use N1MM
In VK7 we have had some very good success with this contest and we are always keen to involve as many operators as we can from newly licenced hams all the way through to seasoned old hands. The RD contest is even a contest that can be done by people that "dont do contesting" so something for everyone, so if you have never contested before this is a great time to start. We also have a large number of operators that are active on so many of the bands, especially the higher frequency bands we are well positioned to do well. 23cm is a great example as here in VK7 we have over 50 people with equipment, now if all those people come on that would make for some great scores especially in the triple points section.. just saying.
Why not form a team with some mates and see how it goes? Don't forget to register your team with the contest manager prior to the contest starting, also grab the rules from the WIA website so you are familiar with them.
A great place to look for activity will be on the usual frequencies such as 52.525, 146.500, 439.000 and 1296.150 on FM, and 50.150, 144.150, 432.150 and 1296.200 USB and as usual most of HF will be a buzz of activity with plenty of opportunities.
Don't forget the triple points can stack up on 160M and 23cm and above so well worth staying up late.
Hope to hear you on the bands, good luck in the contest!

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated

Last Wednesdayâ€Ös Technical Night saw Idris VK7ZIR bringing in a pair of old plug in modules, not just any old modules, these were Audio Programme Line amplifiers made by Trimax Australia circa 1969. In fact they were programme line amplifiers that were located at the St. John telephone exchange in Launceston, dedicated to the carriage of audio from ABC Radio studios in Launceston to the ABCâ€Ös 7NT transmitters located at Kelso in Tasmania. These units provided isolation, matching, conditioning and amplification as well as a “Main” and “Standby or backup” path for the audio signal as it continued its long journey to the AM transmitters located at Kelso. Idris brought in this memorabilia to help celebrate 90 years of 7NT broadcasting in northern Tasmania.
These are not the original valve ones that were installed for the transmitter opening on the 3rd August 1935 but the next generation plug in transistorised modules that inevitably came along.
These were probably in service from the late sixties through to the transfer of 7NT from AM broadcasting at Kelso to FM broadcasting on Mt. Barrow in 2006. With it came the more common descriptor of “ABC Northern Tasmania” and there is now about sixteen relay transmitters throughout and covering Northern Tasmania.
The original AM main transmitter was 7 kilowatt with a 2 kilowatt standby. It initially broadcast on 710 kHz but changed to 711 kHz when the 9 kHz channel spacing was introduced. The original tower was 500 feet or 152 Metre tall, relatively soon after opening a second parasitic tower was added nearby to change the radiation lobe pattern to more of a figure 8, this was to minimise northern radiation and interference with Queensland stations.
Now for some interesting firsts and facts for 7NT and ABC Northern Tasmania:
It was opened by Tasmaniaâ€Ös first and possibly last contribution to Prime Ministers, The Rt. Hon. Joseph Lyons.
It was the first ABC regional station to be built and commissioned in Australia.
It was a relay station to 7ZL in Hobart.
It also relayed programmes from Sydney and Melbourne via a shortwave receiver until the installation of an undersea cable to Tasmania in 1936.
It was the first ABC regional station to broadcast local programmes in Australia.
A new purpose built ABC studio complex at Anne St. Launceston went to air in November 1972.
It still is the biggest ABC regional studio complex in Australia!
Now for all you PMG, Telecom, Telstra and ABC technicians, the Audio Programme Line amplifiers Serial and Item number is 238/30 and they still have the original post installation Dymo labels on them…. Sorry everybody else for this in house joke, HiHi
Now for all you budding health and safety representatives….. Just prior to 7NT being commissioned the word went out that any locals would be allowed to climb the 500 feet tower, if they wanted to!! Not sure about the safety equipment back then, but what an offer and what an experience! Thank you Idris for bringing such nostalgic items in.
Bernie VK7BR also brought in a piece of history that might jog a few memories….. It was a Micronta Model 22-211 multimeter sold by Tandy Electronics last century and in surprisingly good condition. This is one of the few “Clam-shell” or folding multimeter styles that were made. When opened the bottom section housed all probe connection sockets and the 25 position range selector with the top section housing the 100 mm analogue meter. The amazing things are, it was actually a taught band meter movement and the scale incorporated a mirror for higher accuracy when reading, two quite surprising things to find on a cost effective meter from circa 1985. The meter movement is also shunt protected during transit, this is accomplished automatically every time the Multimeter is folded shut.
A bit of a clean and polish and it will look as good as new Bernie.
As always, pictures will be available on the NTARC Web site under “Blogs” for this broadcast. NTARC Blogs

Just a quick heads-up: weâ€Öve had to retune our Wednesday night schedule to stay in sync with the availability of our amazing contributorsâ€öeach one a volunteer, generously donating their time. This will be the last change of the month - honest!!!
Sometimes, the real world causes a bit of QRM, (at least itâ€Ös not BPL!!!) and we need to adjust the dial, install the band pass filter or buy an MFJ-1026!.
Hereâ€Ös the updated Events Schedule for the rest of August:
13 August – Wednesday Experimenterâ€Ös Group
We have an interesting show planned focusing on all things - Blood - yes you heard that one correctly and Optical Communications with Rex VK7MO and Andrew Klekociuk! It doesnâ€Öt get any more diverse than that subject matter.
20 August – Wednesday Experimenterâ€Ös Group
Another diverse show starting with new technology in microcontroller application and then a focus on old technology with step-by-step telephone exchanges along with a tour of the new DATV studio and the technology behind the scenes.
27 August – Presentation Night – Chasing Weather Balloons
Join Steve VK7OO and supported by Anders VK7TCP, and Stephen VK7SH as they track and recover weather balloons and their payloads! We have bought this presentation forward a week to be our August Presentation Night. Thanks to Steve, Anders and Stephen for accommodating our request.
As always, REAST thrives on goodwill, flexibility, and a bit of RF magic. Thanks for your understanding as we keep the program lively, local, and on the air.

August Forum Night - Favourite Digital Mode
https://www.youtube.com/live/pGjxquNjDJU
Last Wednesday night we dived into the world of digital modes.
Armed with the questions of what is your favourite and least favourite modes and why.
Suffice it to say the jury is still out and there isnâ€Öt a mushroom in sight…HIHI!
We had 17 people make comments and the summary starting with favourite modes:
FT8 was most frequently cited as a favourite mode, mentioned by 6 different individuals.
DMR was also popular on both sides with mentions from 5 individuals.
CW certainly got a mention as a favourite mode.
Some of the more exotic modes mentioned included Hellshreiber, FST4, Q65, packet, POCSAG and QRA64.
On the least favourite modes side was:
DMR by at least 4 individuals and
CW by at least 3 and
DSTAR and FT8 by at least two.
We finished with some general discussion. Thanks to all who contributed.

August Presentation Night
Weather Balloon Chasing
https://www.reast.asn.au/event/reast-presentation-weather-balloon-chasing/
Late in August will see a presentation all about the sport of Weather Balloon chasing from Steve VK7OO with support from Anders VK7TCP and Steven VK7SH
There are hundreds of weather balloons with radiosondes launched every day around the world to help Meteorological and Aviation understand what is going on in our atmosphere.
These balloons are one use devices and the balloon eventually bursts and the radiosonde comes back to earth on a parachute. They have a lithium battery and we will have some examples of them at the presentation.
They transmit on the 75cm band and can be picked up using a modest receiver and antenna. Some amateurs have even repurposed the transmitters for amateur beacons on 70cm.
They are tracked through a citizen-science project called SondeHub that Steven VK7SH has been deeply involved with.
https://sondehub.org/
There is also a historical club linkage with radiosondes with Rex Moncur VK7MO developing some early valve based radiosondes back when he started with the Bureau of Meteorology.
When: August 27th, 2025 from 7:30pm
Where: Queens Domain Clubrooms and Stream on the REAST YouTube Streaming.

This gives our VK7 AR News Team a break.

A huge thank you to all people and organisations that assisted with this broadcast.
