Silent Key
Robert Anthony “Tony” Parks KB5YIG/KB9YIG

We note with sadness the passing of Tony Parks, KB5YIG, the creator of the famous SoftRock SDR kits at the age of 84 on Saturday, September 27, 2025.

Tonys work brought software defined radio within reach of thousands of amateurs worldwide, inspiring many to experiment with SDR for the very first time.

His kits and his generosity in sharing knowledge made a lasting mark on our hobby.

We extend our condolences to his family, friends, and the many amateurs who benefited from his contributions.

Vale Tony.

RAOTC
Broadcast for October 2025

Further to that mentioned on the WIA National News, this is another reminder about the RAOTC broadcast for Monday the 6th of October 2025 at 8 pm local time; thats tomorrow night for those listening on Sunday.

This month, as part of club news is reference to a lunch-time Lecture by Peter Wolfenden VK3RV on early aviation radio.

The 2 technical articles begin with one researched by Ian VK3JS which he called Thoughts From The Past; it looks at 73 Magazine (which many listeners will remember) and its founder Wayne Green W2NSD. The last publication of 73 was in 2003, issue number 514.

Clive, VK6CSW presents information on early radio experiments in Western Australia. His research concentrates on the need for communication between Rottenest Island and the mainland and how this stimulated experiments with wireless communication for both land and sea.

Listen at 8 pm Monday, local time, over the VK7RAA/VK7RHT state-wide network.

The broadcast date again is Monday October 6th. Call backs will follow. Please call in if you are able; this provides the RAOTC broadcast committee with an idea of how many are listening to these broadcasts.

If you miss the off-air broadcasts you can listen to audio files on the RAOTC website:

Weekly Wrap-Up

There were no VK7 activations reported over the past week.

In the meantime, Matt, VK7MAT, has been catching up on some online posts where operators have been sharing their light-hearted failures and funny stories from activations. It sparked the thought that he has plenty of those himself.

One that comes to mind was just after purchasing a new coil loaded vertical. Keen to try it out, Matt headed off to a park and set everything up only to discover he had left his UHF to BNC adapter sitting back on the desk at home, which prevented him from connecting his coax to the antenna. Matt had no choice but to pack up, drive home for the adapter, and then return to the park. Since then, Matt has made sure to keep a handful of adapters rolling around in the car just in case.

Another memorable moment was during an activation at Carr Villa Conservation Area. Sitting cross legged on the ground, Matt operated for about 20 minutes before deciding to stand up. Unfortunately, his leg had gone completely numb and instead of standing he toppled into the dirt in a very ungraceful dive. After a quick glance around to check that nobody had witnessed the tumble, he hurriedly switched off the camera that had been recording the activation. The video has only been shared with a couple of people, but if you ask Matt, he might just show you.

That is the nature of portable radio. Something unexpected always pops up, but that is part of the fun, working out how to overcome it and keep the station on the air.

Looking ahead, the POTA Quarterly Support Your Parks Weekend is fast approaching, taking place on the 18th and 19th of October here in VK. Many operators are already making plans to head out and activate over the weekend.

Matt would love to hear your own funny activation stories or your plans for the upcoming Support Your Parks event.

Statewide SSTV Nights

Another busy net night that saw the following participants, VK7s – ZGK, TW, AX, ZAB, EV and OO all sharing thirty five photos.

The highlights were:

The Newtown Rivulet and a rail bridge at Deloraine

    New Kenwood equipment

    An effective frogs squelch control

A pig carrying amateur radio equipment

The “Dunning-Kruger Effect” and I have noticed its rise in social media

Good advice on religious and other matters

Some people have whisky in their DNA

The new jet engine from Dyson

A box of old batteries that are offered free of charge

A “down under” CQ to Europe

When and where to aim like a Jedi

Thanks to teachers for being able to read poor hand writing

A tribute to Tony Parks KB9YIG SK, the creator of “Softrock” the first affordable HF SDR in kit form

And no time to hang about

Again Tony VK7AX interconnected VK7RJG to his SSTV International Gateway and VK7s exchanged photos with PC1K in the Netherlands. Please remember to leave a 30 second break between transmissions to allow the European countries a chance to send photos. Tony will connect the gateway again next week between 6:30pm and 11:30 pm.

Note - Ken VK7KRJs and Steve VK7OOs fully automatic 24/7 monitoring sites allow anyone who has sent SSTV pictures the ability to check them on their pages almost immediately, any time, both South and North Tasmania.

If you missed the net there are archives of these SSTV nights on Kens and Steves SSTV websites or on NTARCs website under blogs.

NEWS FROM THE NORTH WEST
NWCRRA News
VK7RWC out of isolation with a restored link to VK7

The North West Coast Radio Repeater Association has linked the West Coasts main repeater, VK7RWC on Mount Read, into the AllStar VoIP network. It now connects to the ASL3 hub in Burnie, node 1732.

Association president Dion VK7DB carried out the upgrade in wild conditionsbattling deep snow and driving sleet to install the new hardware and a temporary 4G link. The connection runs through the Associations VPN, with plans to soon harden it using fibre optic cable and a permanent IP.

West Coast amateurs are already making contacts across the North West and into Hobart. Upcoming NWCRRA projects include new solar power at Mount Balfour, upgraded antennas at Table Cape, and support for the Australasian Rally Championships via St Valentines Peak repeater.

Once again, the NWCRRA has combined technical expertise and mountain grit to keep Tasmanias amateurs connected.

Firstly, some important information that has just come to hand and the subsequent decision. Peter VK5KDO, or as you probably know him VK7KPC, informed us that there will be an “In Loving Memory” service for Kay (SK), live streamed from Victor Harbour in South Australia this Wednesday afternoon the 8th of October. Therefore the NTARC club rooms will be opening, with a warm invite to members and friends who wish to attend and watch the live streamed service, “In Loving Memory”, in a group setting. The streaming will commence at 2:30 pm (14:30) Tasmanian Daylight Savings Time. After the service there will be ample time for a drink or two and plenty of reminiscing.

For anyone not attending but wishing to watch, there is a link included in the text version of this broadcast or on the NTARC website under “Notices”.

Idris VK7ZIR had an interesting new but very old toy with him at the last technical night. It was a Tungar branded battery charger made by the General Electric Company in America. Its probably not a battery charger brand you may have heard of. Its not really one of these “new-fangled” devices that can charge a multitude of new battery formulations. GEC started manufacturing these chargers circa 1900s, making this particular unit 100 years old and still going strong. Well not really sure about the “strong” part though. It uses standard 230 volt ac input and by the look of it was still using the original Bakelite plug and figure eight mains cable, but we wont go there. Output charge voltage is quoted as 7.5 or 15 volts DC output at probably a couple of amps. Its enclosure is similar in size and lid opening to a small machine-gun ammo style container. Its claim to fame is the use of a tungsten argon mercury vapour rectifier vacuum tube, which is quite a substantial bottle. Probably a good thing it is constructed within a steel enclosure as it evidently emits X-Rays as a by-product of charging your battery! All we needed was a fluorescent viewing screen and we could have seen how well our shoes fitted, Hi-Hi

NTARC General Meeting reminder – This Wednesday the 8th of October at 7:30 pm. Held at Rocherlea Scout Hall, Archer Street, Rocherlea. If you have items you would like added to the agenda please email the secretary at: secretary(at)ntarc.net no later than Tuesday the 7th October.

JOTA - WE NEED YOU

JOTA/JOTI is an annual event that encourages Scouts to get on the air using Amateur Radio and IRC to communicate with other Scouts worldwide.

It is also an excellent opportunity to inspire the next generations of Amateur Radio operators to take up our hobby.

Randall VK7VWK is running an event at the REAST club rooms on the Domain on Saturday Afternoon on the 18th of October 2025.

Timeframe will be sometime between 12:00 and 18:00, depending on the availability of both radio operators and scouts.

I need licensed operators who can operate the club station. Alternatively, you can bring your own gear. If anyone has any specific setups for CW or a foxhunt, that would be great.

You dont need to be there the whole afternoon. If you can only make it for an hour or two, I would be most grateful.

If you can help, please contact me at vk7vwk@gmail.com.

73, Randall Treloyn, VK7VWK

Please note that anyone coming along to help will need to have a Working with Vulnerable People card. Please take a look at the link on the email addition of the broadcast. Get in quick as the card can take up to 4 weeks.

Wednesday Experimenters Group (WEGs)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHXU91BddtE

Last Wednesday night we remembered the Softrock SDR creator Tony Parks KB5YIG Silent Key and Steve VK7OO and Justin VK7TW brought along some of their Softrock kits that they have built.

We revisited the EMR Assessments from our presentation night and explored some interesting comments from John Bews VK4JBE that included not overstating the EMR risk by considering the real-world factors like duty cycle, partial-body exposure, coax losses, antenna directionality, and mode density.

There was some discussion about antenna near-field energy distribution (e.g. long-wires vs cellular arrays) which complicates exposure, highlighting the need for practical, evidence-based assessment.

There was emphasis given to use of the tools whether it is assessed as Class 1 or Class 2 and whether receiving and/or transmitting antennas. This demonstrates the understanding needed to assess the risk and safety margins.

We then moved to how the PMG rang your phone. We demonstrated a ringer dynamotor from the Cygnet Exchange and all the different tones required and how they were generated electromechanically.

Justin VK7TW then showed an electronic ringer box using two 555 that rang phones on stage in a theatre with different styles demonstrated.

We finished with a space Weather report and Russell-Mc-Pherron and STEVE effects and future training and events

We go into a fortnight recess with the WEGs night and see you back in the studio on Wednesday 15th October.

See you there or on the stream.
